Dual element transducers are equipped with two crystals mounted at a slight angle: one crystal transmits the ultrasonic signal, while the other receives it. The crystals are separated by an acoustic barrier and are positioned higher up within the transducer housing. The angle between the crystals determines the depth range of the measurement.
A delay material is placed between the crystals and the measurement surface. This helps reduce the near-surface dead zone, the area where the outgoing and incoming signal are too close together for reliable measurement. Depending on the transducer the minimum wall thickness for these gauges is between 0,6 and 1 mm.

Dual element transducers are particularly well suited for corrosion surveys and rough or irregular surfaces.
